Amsoil

AMSOIL products are formulated to provide maximum protection for engines and fuel systems during storage, while Amsoil synthetic motor oils’ low pour points provide superior cold-temperature protection and performance in two-and four-stroke winter equipment.

Fall Storage Protection

Gasoline can break down in as little as 60 days, causing varnish and gums that clog injectors, fuel lines and carburetors, leading to poor engine performance and starting problems. In many applications, draining the fuel system can be impractical, and doing so can expose the system to corrosion on the bare metal in the tank and fuel system and cause gasket and seal cracking.

AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer reduces the oxidation that occurs when fuel is store for extended periods, improving performance, extending equipment life and decreasing maintenance expenses.Amsoil
During storage, fluctuations in ambient temperatures can form condensation within the engine that can cause surface corrosion on cylinder liners, piston rings, anti-friction bearings and steel/iron contact surfaces on rotational seals. Long periods of storage can also dry out cylinders, often resulting in permanent damage when the equipment is dry-started in the spring.

AMSOIL Engine Fogging Oil offers superior film retention, providing long-term protection against corrosion and dry starts, extending engine life and reducing operating expenses. Its aerosol spray formulation offers easy and clean application, while reaching more components and offering complete distribution of the oil, something especially beneficial in applications with horizontal cylinder orientation, such as outboard motors.

Winter Four-Stroke Performance

Conventional oils thicken in the cold, which can result in inadequate lubrication to critical engine parts at cold start-up, or even prevent the engine from starting.
AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Power Sports Synthetic Motor Oil provides serious protection and performance in four-stroke engines, including ATVs and snowmobiles. Its broad 0W-40 viscosity rating effectively protects in both hot and cold temperature extremes.
AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Synthetic Small Engine Oil provides exceptional protection in the severe-service conditions common in both gasoline-and diesel-fueled small engines including welders, skidsteers, compressors, snowblowers and more. It remains fluid at sub-zero temperatures for superior cold-weather protection.
Winter Two-Stroke Performance
AMSOIL DOMINATOR and INTERCEPTOR
Synthetic 2-cycle Oils provides exceptional performance in snowmobiles and other two-stroke equipment. Amsoil DOMINATOR is formulated with heavier base oils for “on the edge” operation, while also protecting pistons and bearings subjected to the rigors of extreme riding.
AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR is engineered specifically for power-sports applications and engines equipped with exhaust power valves. It contains the finest synthetic base oils and additives for exceptional cleanliness, while controlling exhaust valve sticking and providing outstanding overall lubrication.
Gasoline Additive
AMSOIL Quick shot SE is formulated to thoroughly clean varnish, gums and insoluble debris in two-and four-stroke gasoline-powered small engines and power sports equipment fuel systems, restoring peak performance. Amsoil Quickshot effectively addresses performance issues related to ethanol, water and dirty pump gas, while stabilizing fuel between uses and during short-term storage periods. Use Amsoil for fewer fuel related problems and better winter performance.

Amsoil diesel Plus Cold Flow Improver is formulated with excellent detergency properties to help keep injectors, rings, piston crowns and the fuel pump lubricated, plus lowers the cold flow filter plugging point (CFPP) by as much as 34 F (19 C) in ultra-low sulfur diesel.
Total system cleaner and lubricity improver for all types of diesel engines. Improves performance and longevity of diesel engines while reducing deposits, black smoke and emissions. Improves fuel economy by cleaning dirty injectors. Restores horsepower. Designed for heavy-duty diesel engines.

RECOMMENDATIONS
One 16-oz. bottle of AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver treats 40 gallons of fuel. Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver will show no signs of solidifying in its concentrated state in the bottle until the temperature reaches -22°F (-30°C). It will only freeze in its concentrated state, and AMSOIL recommends storing it at temperatures above 0°F (-18°C). If Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is allowed to freeze in the bottle it can be thawed and used. When mixed with diesel fuel, Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver effectively improves diesel fuel cold-temperature properties. It is important to treat fuel before it has reached its cloud point as Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver will not dissolve wax crystals which have already formed in the fuel.

AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver meets federal regulations for ULSD fuel. It complies with federal low-sulfur content requirements for use in diesel motor vehicles and non-road engines. While Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is formulated specifically for ULSD fuel, it also performs well with non-ULSD fuels, including biodiesel.

AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is specifically formulated to improve the lubrication of fuel system components, improve fuel flow, help maintain fuel integrity and prevent the fuel filter and injectors from clogging. Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver is recommended for diesel-powered vehicles, home heating oil and kerosene heating systems.

SUPERIOR COLD-WEATHER PERFORMANCE
As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting. While low quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F (4°C), most fuels have a cloud point near 32°F (0°C). The point at which the wax crystals clog the fuel filter is known as the cold filter-plugging point (CFPP). AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver lowers the CFPP by as much as 34°F (19°C) in ULSD.

It also reduces the pour-point temperature of treated diesel fuel, providing better fuel delivery to the injectors during cold weather. It is formulated with a jet-fuel-type deicer that disperses water to control ice formation in all sections of the fuel system. Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for the use of #1 diesel fuel, enabling better fuel economy, performance and lubricity.

POUR POINT VS. CFPP
It is important to distinguish between CFPP and pour point. Many competitors make great claims regarding pour point, leading consumers to believe their products are superior when they actually have an inferior CFPP. Once fuel surpasses its cloud point, the wax crystals begin to clog the fuel filter. The CFPP temperature is a more important characteristic than pour point because the engine will not run if fuel cannot pass through the fuel filter.

REDUCED NEED FOR #1 DIESEL FUEL
One traditional solution to cold weather problems in diesel engines is the use of #1 diesel fuel, which is diesel fuel diluted with kerosene. While #1 diesel fuel has an advantage in low-temperature operability, there are also several disadvantages. The energy content of #1 diesel fuel is about 95 percent of that of #2 diesel fuel, resulting in reduced fuel economy and less horsepower. In addition, the kerosene used in #1 diesel fuel provides less lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel distributor, increasing the likelihood for wear on these critical components. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for blending standard #2 diesel fuel with lower-quality #1 diesel fuel, helping to maintain fuel economy and keep engines functioning normally.

Johannesburg To Pretoria At High Speed

Several years ago, Gauteng authorities concocted an original project. The aim was to promote public transport, ease up the traffic congestion and, as a by-product, contribute to saving fuel and preserving the environment.

In October 2006, they decreed that the fast lane of the highway connecting Johannesburg and Pretoria, one of the business thoroughfares in the busy province of Gauteng, was to be reserved for buses, taxis, and vehicles with three or more occupants for a whole week.

The result was a traffic congestion of mammoth proportion, because one vital ingredient was missing: the public transport.

Fast forward to August 2011, and a similar project could perhaps work, thanks to the start of the operation of the Gauteng high-speed train between Rosebank in Johannesburg and Hatfield in Pretoria. Travelling at 160 kilometre per hour and taking 38 minutes to make the trip between Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Gautrain may well become the transport of choice for all those that are lucky enough to live somewhere around Hatfield and work somewhere around Rosebank (or vice versa). By comparison, a car ride takes at least one hour, on a good day.

Targeting Car Owners

Car owners are the main target audience of the Gautrain. The Rosebank – Hatfield trains will run between 5.30 AM and 8.30 PM, at 12-minute intervals during peak and at 20-minute intervals during off-peak hours. On weekends, the trains will run every 30 minutes. The tickets cost R46 for a single trip, R417 for a seven-day pass and R, 633 for a 35 days pass. The feeder-busses operate along the stations in the radius of several kilometres and bus tickets cost R6 one way.

The prospect of ditching the car in favour of a train ride will become that more attractive after the fuel prices top the R10 mark, as they will sometime later in August 2011, and after the authorities introduce toll gates that will make even short trips on highways prohibitively expensive.

It is estimated that the trains will convey about one hundred thousand passengers between Johannesburg and Pretoria every day, easing at least 20 percent of traffic off the highway. That’s 25,000 to 30,000 cars less each day. This stretch of road usually sees about 150,000 vehicles in each direction.

The officials say that in a few years the upgraded transport infrastructure of Gauteng and indeed all major South African cities will radically change the way people commute between home and work.

In the meantime, the more affluent commuters who do not happen to live or work close to the Gautrain route will have to turn to their cars. The less affluent ones, who make up the bulk of the working population, will have to continue to depend on the chaotic and often unsafe minibus taxis, the informal small-scale buses that operate without timetables or formal stops.

The Cost Of Gautrain

The Gautrain is touted as the answer to Gauteng’s traffic woes. This, the smallest South African province, accounts for about 40 percent of the nations GDP, and traffic jams are harming the business.

The Gautrain’s costs, originally projected at about R25 billion, have gone over R30 billion, with the project still months from completion.

On Tuesday 2 August, one month behind the schedule, the second phase became operational, between Rosebank in Johannesburg and Hatfield in Pretoria. The first phase, between Sandton and OR Tambo International Airport, was opened in June 2010. However, the final leg of the project, from Rosebank to Park Station in Johannesburg CBD, is not expected to open for several months, mostly due to water seepage problems.

Expensive as it is, the Gautrain is only the first step in bestowing a wide and reliable network of public transport to Gauteng, the economic hub of South Africa, and to the rest of the country.
