Hay Days Kicks Off 2010-2011 Snowmobile Season

The Hay Days snowmobile swap meet and expo is the traditional kick-off to the winter snowmobile racing season. Moving to a larger location in North Branch, Minn., this year’s event drew a record 55,000 attendees eager to see the new machines, accessories and race team lineups. Team AMSOIL/Scheuring Speed Sports took the opportunity to show off its new Ski-Doo sleds, and once again partnered with Woody’s traction products, Makita Industrial Power Tools and Klim riding gear to host the AMSOIL/Woody’s Carbide Challenge, where show-goers lined up to try their hand at the team’s snocross style pit stop competition. Team AMSOIL/Torchmate Finishes Second at Inaugural Ultra 4 Stampede

Team AMSOIL/Torchmate off-road racers Brad and Roger Lovell competed at the inaugural Ultra 4 Stampede race just east of Reno, Nev. on September 11. The three-lap, 66-mile race took place on a challenging course of rough and rocky desert roads and three untamed canyons. After some last-minute tuning, prep and double checks, the green flag dropped and the brothers powered their way through rocks, silt and dust. By the third lap, they held second place by 18 minutes and found themselves deep in lapped traffic. At the top of the second rock canyon, however, the rear axle lost its lubrication. With the win now out of sight, the team focused on finishing, kept a strong pace and limped across the finish line in second.

“The brutality of this race redefines rock racing,” said Brad Lovell. “It joins King of the Hammers as the ultimate test for this type of truck. Once we lost fluid, I thought for sure the rear axle would fail, but the coating of Amsoil saved it from seizing. Torchmate was a great help and opened their shop for all competitors before the race. This was a well-run, well-promoted race and a confidence booster for me to get back up on the podium.”

In addition to the car shows, the AMSOIL Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge, this was also Hot Rod Drag Week… and pretty exciting at that. Drag Week has been described as the Road Tour on Steroids.
Day one took the racers to National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio where HOT ROD’s Drag Week officially began with the drivers meeting at 9:00 a.m. The racing action heated up immediately. In the race to the first 6-second pass in Drag Week history, Larry Larson and his silver and purple Chevy II posted a 7.12 at 189 mph time, while Jeff Lutz’s black ’57 Chevy ran 7.41 at 179. Then they packed up and hit the highway to O’Reilly Motorsports Park in Indianapolis, Indiana for day two.
HOT ROD Drag Week was scheduled to run at the historic O’Reilly Motorsports Park in Indy, home of the NHRA U.S. Nationals, a few years ago but they got rained out. The participants all wanted to come back, so that’s where they went for day 2. The weather was perfect and the performances were amazing, as was the carnage. A group of Australians blew the engine in their ’71 Chevelle and spilled oil all over the track, then performed a quick engine change with a long-block from a local O’Reilly’s store and got back on the road. Amazing.
Yesterday’s action was at Milan Dragway in Milan, Michigan. The day started off wet but the track at Milan was dried and the cars began running at about 11:30 a.m. It’s a long drive to Pittsburgh Raceway Park, site of Day 4 of HOT ROD’s Drag Week. Canard Crowned Motocross Champion

Only two riders in motocross history have made up more ground to win a championship than Team GEICO Powersports/ AMSOIL/ Honda 250 rider Trey Canard. Canard had a slow start to the 2010 season, and found himself 56 points behind leader Christophe Pourcel with seven rounds remaining. That’s when he caught fire, taking five wins in the next six rounds and entering the final event in Pala, Calif. just seven points behind Pourcel.

With the championship up for grabs, both riders felt the pressure to finish strong in Pala. Although Canard fell while trying to pass Pourcel in the first moto, Pourcel took a spill of his own a few laps later, separating his shoulder and leaving him unable to finish the first moto or compete in the second moto. Canard recovered from his fall to finish fourth in the first moto and jump to an 11-point lead in the standings. A third place finish in the second moto sealed third place overall for the weekend and Canard’s second career professional motocross championship.

“After moto one I was kind of in shock. I had no idea what to think,” said Canard. “I knew the championship was extremely possible at that point, but drew myself back together and tried my best to just focus on moto two. It was really coming to me that I was going to get the opportunity to be the 2010 250 Motocross Champion; it was an unbelievable feeling.”

Canard will head to Lakewood, Colo. this weekend to compete for Team USA in the 2010 Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations.

The event to determine the Fastest Street Car in America started at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio, then went to O’Reilly Motorsports Park in Indianapolis, IN, Milan Dragway in Milan, MI, Pittsburgh Raceway Park in New Alexandria, PA, and then back to National Trail from September 14 through the 18. The 1200 mile long drive took everything from daily driven hot rods to street-legal race cars over Midwest highways and back roads, followed by a few hours of drag racing each day. When all was said and done, Larry Larson rose to the top as the overall winner.

Larson’s ’66 Chevy II runs a 565 cubic-inch, twin turbo engine and laid down an unbelievable 6.95 at 209 mph quarter-mile pass on the last day. Again, this is after driving 1200 miles in the rain, on the same tires and with the same equipment as what he used on the track. The rest of the classes provided just as much excitement with great performances, gut-check travails on the road, and an overall family feeling and atmosphere. If you’ve never witnessed Drag Week for yourself, make sure to come out and at least watch in 2011.
