Rinker Takes Win in Memphis

Rinker Takes Win in Memphis

Although he earned a Formula One podium finish in Bay City, Mich., similar success in the Formula Two class has eluded Team AMSOIL powerboat racer Terry Rinker this season, finishing fourth in the three events leading up to the Memphis Riverfront Regatta in Memphis, Tenn. Seeking a competitive edge, Rinker learned of a Formula Two boat crafted by the manufacturer of the boat he piloted to the 2003 Formula One Championship. Retrieving the craft in north Georgia and finding it in like-new condition, Rinker and Crew Chief James Chambers immediately went to work preparing it for competition.

After rolling out the new craft in Memphis, Rinker showed off its speed in the time trials and heat races, earning the third starting position in the 30-lap final. Rocketing off the start dock in the top three, Rinker moved into second just after the race’s midpoint and set his sights on leader Donnie McDowell. With time running out, Rinker passed McDowell with only five laps remaining, successfully held off his challengers and took the checkered flag.

With two events remaining in the APR Superleague Series, Rinker holds second in the points race. He next competes August 21-22 at A Roar of Thunder in Aurora, Ind.

Team AMSOIL Takes Checkered Flag in Sarasota

Team AMSOIL offshore racers Bob Teague and Paul Whittier competed at the Superboat Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix on Fourth of July weekend in Sarasota, Fla. Following 100 miles of testing in the calmer-than-normal Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, the conditions for Sunday’s race were much rougher.

When the green flag dropped, Team AMSOIL got stuck in traffic going into the first turn, allowing the new Stihl 388 boat to take the early lead before engaging in a close deck-to-deck battle with Team AMSOIL. Team AMSOIL caught and passed Team Stihl and extended its lead to about 11 seconds before being slowed by lapped traffic. While Team Stihl came within a boat length heading into the final outside turn, Team AMSOIL hit a large rogue wave which caused the boat to hook violently and end up on the wrong side of the turn buoy. Team AMSOIL was then forced to go back and “make up” the turn, allowing Team Stihl to cross the finish line first. However, post race inspections revealed Team Stihl’s propellers did not meet the required specifications for thickness, disqualifying them and awarding Team AMSOIL the checkered flag.

Team AMSOIL will next compete July 16-18 at the OPA/Geico race in Harrison Township, Mich.

AMSOIL Offshore Team Dominates at Sunny Isles Beach and Biloxi

Two weeks after winning the OPA Miss Geico Series opener in Ocean City, Md., Team AMSOIL offshore racers Bob Teague and Paul Whittier traveled to Sunny Isles Beach, Fla. for the third annual Miami to Bimini Ocean Race and the second race of the OPA Miss Geico Series. Currently the Cat Lite record holders in the 106-mile Miami to Bimini Ocean Race, Teague and Whittier expertly navigated through the rough conditions and earned the best time in the Cat Lite class, finishing approximately nine minutes ahead of the second place Team Infinity boat. Team AMSOIL capped the weekend by jumping to a quick lead and taking the win in the OPA Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Challenge.

Teague and Whittier also recently competed at the OSS Smokin’ the Sound Race in Biloxi, Miss. Engaging in close battles with Team PhoenixParts.com, Team AMSOIL ultimately passed the very fast PhoenixParts.com boat early in each heat for the victory.

Teague and Rinker All Out

On The Water: Teague and Rinker All Out When it comes to racing power boat racing, AMSOIL has two of the best. Bob Teague is not only the tech editor for Power Boat Magazine and owns one of the top engine shops in the world, he is also unbeatable in his #77 AMSOIL Skater. Teague has one just about every race and championship over the past few years and will now be a featured racer on the GEICO Series television show that will air on Versus later this year. Teague will race in Ocean City, Md. this weekend. From big inboard motors to high end outboards, we turn to Terry Rinker for titles. Rinker, who has won championships four of the past six seasons, will run an open schedule in 2010 after the dissolving of the Champ Boat Series. Rinker finished second in points in 2009, and will be the headliner at the Bay City event June 26-27. Along with all of that, you can also find AMSOIL at the AMA Amateur Nationals presented by AMSOIL, Sturgis Bike Rally, Laconia Bike Week and all of the AMSOIL Shock Therapy Monster Truck shows. Rinker Kicks Off 2010 Racing Season

Team AMSOIL powerboat racer Terry Rinker was looking to get a jump on the competition at the first race of the 2010 P.R.O.P. Series in Port Neches, Texas. The weekend started strong, with Rinker clocking in the fastest time in the time trials. He took fourth in the first qualifying heat, and after weather forced the cancellation of the second heat, Rinker

started the main event in the fourth position. After making a pass to move to third, Rinker’s quest for a victory came to an abrupt end as the boat spun into a violent barrel roll.

Because the race course was near the Gulf of Mexico, the electrical connections, switches, boat and motor components had been treated with a light coat of AMSOIL Metal Protector and Heavy Duty Metal Protector. A post-race inspection showed very little sign of electrolysis or saltwater corrosion.

Rinker will compete next at the Bay City River Roar in Bay City, Mich. on the weekend of June 26-27.
