When you think about car maintenance, you probably think about the typical oil change, tire rotation, air filter change, etc. But did you know that there are steps you can take to maintain your gas mileage? Of course, duly completing all of the previous maintenance services will help your car get more miles out of each tank, but there are other steps you can take to get the most out of every trip to the gas station. By following these tips, you can spend less time at the pump and more time on the open road!

• Use the right gasoline. If your car calls for a premium or super grade gas, then don’t skimp on the quality. Though most cars run just fine on unleaded, a car that needs a higher octane fuel may encounter difficulties when running on lower quality gas. You may be spending more at the pump, but it will save you in repair costs, as the mechanical pieces of your vehicle can ultimately end up damaged if you use the wrong type of fuel. Also, it will require less trips to the pump, as your car will run more efficiently

• Keep quarters in your glove compartment. Why? To fill up your tires when they seem a bit deflated. When you have less air in your tires they spread out beneath the weight of your car, causing a larger surface area to meet the road. When this happens there is also an increase in friction, as a bigger section of your tires is coming into contact with the rough pavement. More friction means more fuel is needed to go—resulting in your tank of gas depleting before you know it! Adding air to your tires takes a couple of quarters and maybe five minutes, so it is definitely a great way to keep your gas mileage in check. Be sure that you use an air pressure gauge so that you don’t overfill the tires, though!

• Clean! The more weight you have in your car the more work the vehicle does to move—meaning the more gas you spend accelerating and maintaining speed. By cleaning out your car and removing any excess weight you can lighten the load and pressure put on your gas tank.

• Drive strategically. If you know there’s a huge hill—and a side street that can avoid it—take the side street. Dragging a car that weighs over a ton uphill takes a great deal of fuel, but coasting down it takes none at all! Think about your route before you leave so that you can take the most gas-efficient way to your destination.

• Get regular tune-ups. Your vehicle is like a puzzle, with each piece fitting perfectly to form a car that reliably takes you from point a to point b; however, if one piece of the puzzle is off it has the capability to throw the entire picture out of focus. Regular tune-ups will catch small problems before they become big issues, and can save you tons of money in repairs and at the pump.

Maintaining your car is important if you want it to go the distance, so be sure that you take all of the steps necessary to get the best gas mileage out of your vehicle!

It’s well known that even the best auto insurance rates for teen drivers are usually very high in comparison with other age groups. If you’re looking for cheap insurance for young drivers in your home, be sure to ask your insurance company what discounts your child may qualify for.
