The Improved 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid

By Kathy Jenkins

The 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid has improved its gasoline economy from 41 mpg to 44 mpg and is now using a lithium-ion battery for energy. For automobiles that do not plug into the power grid, the Civic Hybrid has solidified its second-place position with the improvement in fuel economy. The rise in gas mileage helps make the Civic closer to the Prius and ahead of the Lexus CT 200h. Because the Civic Hybrid is not really a hatchback, Honda claims that it is the most fuel-efficient sedan on US highways.

The Integrated Motor Assist is going to be the fifth released hybrid powertrain system that the 2012 Civic Hybrid uses, which is thin, pancake like electronic motor/generator. The system is similar to Ford and Toyota where it assists the gasoline engine by being sandwiched between the transmission and engine. Even though the car can be operated by just electric power, it usually uses a mixture of both electric and gasoline engines. All engine parts still keep moving even when the car runs for a while on electric power. If the car stops the engine shuts off, and then starts up again when it is time to go, like other hybrid vehicles.

The new 2012 Civic Hybrid includes a larger gasoline engine, along with the shift to lithium-ion batteries. In spite of the boost from 1.3-liter engine to 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the horsepower from both electric and gas continue to be the same. The engine works by using the electric motor more often because the engine runs at a lower RPM due to the larger displacement, which results in a quieter ride. Every element of the hybrid system was modified, like the increase of the motor output from 15kw to 20kw. To better take care of temperature, it now uses plastic spacers, together with using more coils and magnets that are widely spaced. The horsepower with the motor has been accelerated simply by three horsepower to 23 horsepower.

The 20-kw Li-ion battery is a major advancement over the nickel-metal hydride battery that was used in the previous model, providing an extra 5kw of power with 30% less weight. Together with the battery’s 35% improvement in efficiency and the IMA system’s greater power, the Civic Hybrid is now offering the capability of using only electric motor power more often, in certain times of cruising at low speeds. Considering the move to lithium battery, the problems that affected the previous battery should now be resolved. Finishing the IMA system is going to be the continually variable transmission. The transmission works similar to a 10-speed bicycle which comes with a drive pulley and a driven pulley which are linked with a steel belt. It is a combination of a manual transmission and also a conventional geared automatic transmission.

With reliable advancements in fuel-efficiency and battery, the 2012 Civic Hybrid has certainly earned its honors. It is definitely giving the Prius a run for its money.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil is formulated with a proprietary blend of the finest synthetic base oils and additives available today. This unique AMSOIL chemistry represents a breakthrough development in the field of two-cycle engine lubrication.

The backbone of AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR 2-Cycle Oil is a specially developed molecularly saturated synthetic base oil. This, combined with a potent additive package, ensures exceptional lubricity, cleanliness and optimum clean-burning characteristics. Extensive research and testing, including a full snowmobiling season in severe Rocky Mountain applications, has proven that wear on cylinders, pistons and bearings is dramatically reduced. And with up to 30 percent more detergency and dispersancy than typical two-cycle oils, AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR virtually eliminates damaging deposits on piston skirts, ring grooves and exhaust power valves.

APPLICATIONS

AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil is recommended as an injector oil or at a 50:1 mix ratio in carbureted, electronic fuel Injected (EFI) and direct fuel injected (DFI) snowmobiles, personal watercraft, motorcycles, ATVs and jet boats, including, but not limited to, those manufactured by Bombardier®, Yamaha®, Arctic Cat®, Polaris®, Kawasaki®, Suzuki® and Honda®.

It is recommended wherever JASO FC or API TC two-cycle oils are specified. INTERCEPTOR is a premium quality replacement for recreational equipment manufacturers’ branded two-cycle oils. It is compatible with most mineral and synthetic two-cycle oils, however, for best performance, mixing oils should be minimized.

400,000 Miles of Severe Snowmobile Field testing With No Deposit Buildup, Power Valve Sticking, Ring Sticking or Engine Failures.
Subjected to adverse field testing conditions in the Rocky Mountains, including long trail rides, high RPM powder riding and steep hill climbs, AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR demonstrated superior wear protection and outstanding deposit control.

Level 5 Motorsports’ Impressive HPD ARX-01g Debut, Wirth Research Inks A Long-term Deal With Honda

By Brent Arends

There has been no shortage of publicity regarding the Scott Tucker-owned Level 5 Motorsports racing team’s mid-season decision to switch cars. Despite the risks the change brought of interrupting the explosive momentum the team has maintained since the season’s open, as well as the potential points lost by withdrawing from races while the car was being finished, the change has been nothing but positive. The marriage Level 5’s skillful and talented drivers; the integrity, innovation and reputation of Honda Performance Development; and the precision and technique of Wirth Research has benefited all three groups.

When the wait for Level 5’s new LMP2 Lola Honda Spyder was over, it was obvious the car was well worth it. Not that Level 5 had too much to worry about, with wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Grand Prix of Long Beach, along with podium finishes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Six Hours of Imola, all during the team’s debut LMP2 season. When the team ignited the engine on the raceway for the first time at ModSpace American Le Mans Monterey presented by Patron, they bettered their season in the only way to better an already winning season: They made history. Tucker and co-drivers Christophe Bouchut and Luis Diaz earned their highest overall finish of the season at the Laguna Seca race. The car didn’t require a single unscheduled pit stop or encounter any unexpected issues, which easily secured the team’s fourth LMP2 victory of the season and Tucker and Bouchut’s drivers’ championships.

Bouchut nailed a best time of 1: 16.867 in the new HPD ARX-01g, which is just a second behind the LMP1 winning car’s fastest lap. With this being the first iteration of the HPD ARX-01g, with development still in early stages for cost-capped configurations, the pace was impressive, especially considering the model had less than three hours of run time prior to the endurance test.

The lofty expectations for the new Honda before it was finished were valid enough that Tucker had reserved the first two chassis that were produced, and the team waited patiently for its new and improved car, even withdrawing from competitions in order to have it in time for Petit Le Mans. The hype surrounding the car, both before it was proven and following its tenacious debut, solidified the partnership between Wirth Research and Honda Performance Development (HPD), as Wirth announced Sept. 9 the beginning of a new long-term technical partnership with Honda.

Wirth and HPD have been working together since 2003, but the new relationship extends the companies’ sports prototype programs and includes a new IndyCar project. In an official Wirth press release, the company notes that the unyielding success of its LMP1 and LMP2 cars in the past year have opened the opportunity to build on the achievements and begin to evaluate several new projects for high-profile clients.

“We looked through the numbers, inside and out, and from our perspective, there’s no doubt the Honda package in the new cost-capped configuration will be a front-runner in LMP2,” Tucker said, after making the mid-season decision to switch cars. “We’ve seen gains with the engine all year, and the exciting thing is that there’s still room for improvement.” Members of the Level 5 team even visited the Wirth Research center to check out their new set of wheels in production.

It’s not just any car that can evoke so much anticipation out of an already dominant racing team. It can be expected that as long as there’s improvement in the prototypes, teams like Level 5—which constantly strategizes and evaluates situations to optimize the chance of a victory—will keep HPD and Wirth high on their radars. The new long-term partnership between the companies is the exciting beginning of an era of innovation and ultimate performance ability in motorsports.

Brent Arends has been keeping a close eye on Scott Tucker, owner and driver, of Level 5 Motorsports throughout the past year. To get more information about Tucker, check out http://www.motorsport.com/#/all/search/?q=scott%252520tucker

Trey Canard Wins Again

GEICO Powersports/AMSOIL/Honda rider Trey Canard swept both 250cc motos at Saturday’s Steel City National to pull within seven points of the AMA Motocross championship points lead with one race left on the 2010 schedule. The impressive outing yielded Canard’s fifth overall title of the outdoor season, by far the most of any rider in his class.
Canard shared the spotlight with his AMSOIL teammates Kevin Windham and Brett Metcalfe, who finished 1-2 on the day in the 450cc category. Windham won the first moto and was runner-up in the second, while Metcalfe bagged second and third-place finishes.
“Right from the start today we were good,” said Canard. “My first practice was strong. The second one was even better. The first moto was just awesome. I was really stoked with the way I rode. I was just solid. It was close the whole race and (points leader Christophe Pourcel) was right behind me the whole time but I kept him there.”
Thirteen points behind Christophe Pourcel at the start of the event, Canard fought hard to hold off the defending series champion in both motos.

A mid-season replacement for injured Honda pro Davi Millsaps, Windham’s moto win and overall title were his first of the outdoor season. He led seven laps on the day.
“I practiced great and stayed near the front either in first, second or third, so we got off to a great start and went from there,” Windham said. “Winning the first moto was fun. It was a great race going back and forth with my old teammate Metty. We were all giving each other some ribbing all day and that made it a lot of fun.”
Metcalfe’s hard riding moved him around Honda rider Andrew Short for second in the championship standings. He is now five points ahead of Short with one race left. The 450cc title has been secured by Ryan Dungey, who won the day’s second moto.
“Awesome day,” Metcalfe said. “To pick up a second and a third and gain all those points is exactly what we needed. The bike was strong. Everything was really clicking for me today.”
Team riders Eli Tomac, Justin Barcia, and Blake Wharton remained in the mix with top-10 finishes of their own. Tomac finished fourth in Moto 1 and fifth in Moto 2 for an overall ranking of fourth. Barcia rebounded from a 10th-place result in the first moto to a sixth-place finish in Moto 2 to end the event sixth. Wharton was seventh and ninth in the two races, which equaled a seventh-place overall result.
The championship will be decided next Saturday at Pala Raceway outside San Diego.
